Father, Charles Jackson Paine was born in 1833. He is shown here in his Civil War uniform. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the war.

When he returned, he married Julia Bryant Paine, mother, who had a sweet disposition and was the only child of one of Boston's early millionaires.

Paine decided he wanted to buy a farm in the country and he chose Weston, which was a quiet country town but convenient to the city. He bought 120 acres on Highland Street in 1868. At first he lived in the existing Colonial house on the property.

The Paines lived in Boston in the winter and on the Cape in the summer. They used the Weston house in the spring and fall.

General Paine was a champion sailor who won the America's Cup race three times. This picture shows his oldest sons, Sumner and John Bryant Paine. They are pictured with a toy sailboat in 1879.

Helen Kimball Paine, fifth daughter of the seven children, was an accomplished artist.

Carol Paine, granddaughter, is pictured here as a child in 1903.
