The Weston Historical Society's Tercentennial Exhibition
The society's tercentennial exhibition was designed by Will Twombly of Spokeshave Designs. Graphic design is by Mary Orr of Orr Studios. The exhibit includes a timeline and nine thematic areas: agriculture, industry, professionals, education, commerce, estates, summer pleasures, Weston in wartime, and post-war growth. Exhibit cases were donated by the Concord Museum and Peabody Essex Museum.

The six-member exhibition committee was chaired by Pam Fox and included Mary Gregory, Mary Marder, Tania Deary, Rebekah Gardiner, and Robin Reisman. Each member was responsible for one or more of the exhibit themes, including the research, layout of the display panels, and label content.

Objects in the Exhibition
Most of the objects in the exhibition are from the collection of the Weston Historical Society. Among the highlights are three paintings by Weston artist Gertrude Fiske, an 1890s golf bag and clubs used at Weston Golf Club in its original location on Church Street, and a World War I trunk with its complete contents including gas mask, communication device, and memorabilia (a map of Paris, French Phrase Book, military papers, and dozens of other paper items displayed in one of the nine cases.

For our special tercentennial lecture, the Weston Historical Society is honored to welcome Dr. Stephen Kenney, Director of the Commonwealth Museum. The museum is located in the Massachusetts Archives building on Columbia Point and brings to life the history of the state from its founding to the present day.
One of its great treasures is the 1629 Charter of Massachusetts Bay, also known as the Winthrop Charter, pictured here being worked on at the Northeast Document Conservation Center. This manuscript was brought from England to the New World by John Winthrop on the ship Arabella in 1630. Sir Richard Saltonstall was also a passenger on the Arabella. Saltonstall lead a group of settlers up the Charles River to establish the settlement of Watertown, which includes present-day Weston.
At the Commonwealth Museum, climate controlled cases display this and other unique royal charters, as well as one of the 14 original copies of the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights and the "John Adams" Massachusetts Constitution of 1780.
